Gary Neville says that Sunderland are giving it a go, whilst Forest’s 2022 spending was just utter madness.
Speaking to ‘Socialist Worker’ newspaper – https://socialistworker.co.uk/ – Neville, 68, said, “I have a lot of respect for the club. They are doing what all newly promoted teams should do: spend 100% of their revenue on new players to strengthen the squad. Sunderland are giving it a go.”
Sunderland are giving it a go. Forest is utter madness.
When asked about comparing Sunderland to Nottingham Forest, who have been playing in the top tier of English football for three consecutive seasons and are now competing in Europe, Gary Neville said, “Forest’s spending is similar to Chelsea’s. Chelsea have spent over £billion on players, whilst Forest spent £300 million on 43 players. There is no comparison to Sunderland. Sunderland are giving it a go, whilst Forest were just ridiculous.”
When Neville was asked whether Forest were right to spend so much on new players, considering that the squad was worth a mere £12 million upon promotion, Neville said, “Forest behaved like a Mafia gang,” said the socialist million, “It was utter madness at the club.”
Nottingham Forest belongs in the lower leagues.
Compared to the other newly promoted clubs of that season, Fulham and Bournemouth both had squads worth nearly £200 million more than Nottingham Forest. The play-off winners consisted mainly of loan players. The likes of Djed Spence, Joe Garner, Kieran Davis, and Danish midfielder Philip Zinckernagel all returned to their respective clubs.
Nottingham Forest entertain Sunderland this weekend following an encouraging away performance against Real Betis in Seville. Igor Jesus – https://www.theguardian.com/football/2025/sep/25/igor-jesus-chris-wood-nottingham-forest-ange-postecoglou – and Elliot Anderson – https://tbrfootball.com/how-nottingham-forest-feel-about-elliot-anderson-as-liverpool-and-newcastle-circle/ – looked particularly impressive in a 2-2 draw.
Neville finished by saying, “I wish Huddersfield had been promoted in 2022. They would’ve given it a go. I hope Forest gets relegated and loses to Sunderland. I think Nottingham Forest belongs in the lower leagues, whilst Manchester United should break away into a Super League of Europe’s finest.”
Gary ‘The Red’ Neville’s prediction: Nottingham Forest 0 – Sunderland ‘giving it a go’ 4.
Tree Seasons prediction: Forest 5 – Sunderland 4.
