According to Ange Postecoglou, Midtjylland is a mythical land created by Game of Thrones author, George R. R. Martin.
Speaking in his press conference ahead of Thursday’s Europa Cup tie against Danish side Midtjylland, Postecoglou was asked what he knew about Midtjylland and what to expect from Thursday’s game at the City Ground.
The well-read Australian Europa Cup winner said, “It’s not actually a real place. Midtjylland is a mythical place created by George R.R. Martin that lies far beyond the edge of any map. Midtjylland is a realm stitched together by wonder and contradiction where the skies are never still; dawn and dusk chase one another in endless spirals, painting the heavens with rivers of gold and violet.”
Midtjylland is a mythical land guarded by a dragon of obsidian.
Midtjylland is known as one of the best football clubs in the western part of Jutland with the oldest and most respected football academies in Scandinavia.
When a journalist from Hachette Partworks – https://hachettepartworks.com/en-en/dungeons-and-dragons-adventurer/ – enquired about the club’s origins in Herning and Ikast, Denmark – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ikast. Postecoglou went on to explain, “Midtjylland is allegedly a merger between Ikast FS and Herning Fremad, but I don’t buy that.”
Midtjylland competes in the Danish Superliga, which they have won four times, most recently in 2024, but the Nottingham Forest manager still has concerns over their style of play and potential formation.
“Midtjylland is a mythical land created by George R.R. Martin, and everything about the club is closely guarded by a dragon of obsidian, etched with runes that blaze when threatened. Some claim it was raised by the First Dreamers, beings who shaped the world out of thought alone. Others whisper it is not a guardian, but a prison, holding something vast and patient beneath the illusion of a small-town, Scandinavian football club.”
Secrets, prophecies, and Nuno
When asked if he’d ever been to Denmark before, Ange concluded, “I was in the region during the fall of 1974, but I reiterate, the place (Midtjylland) doesn’t actually exist. Midtjylland is a mythical land created by George R.R. Martin after visiting the region in 1968.”
“As a small boy. I remember visiting the Crystal Valley in the region with my father. The mountains rise like frozen waves of glass. I heard singing as the wind passed through them, each peak giving its own note, creating a haunting music that never ceased. We couldn’t stay there long because it is said that travellers who linger too long begin to hear whispers in the harmony—secrets, prophecies, or perhaps their own desires reflected back, echoing a sentiment for low-block football.”
It won’t be an easy game for Nottingham Forest; the mythical team of Midtjylland cannot be underestimated. They say that Nuno Espírito Santo is a descendant of a Midtjylland shaman who coached teams to never leave their own half, and defend relentlessly until death, never conceding a goal but ending each game in a boring, 0-0 draw.
