Simon Bates is to host ‘Our tune’ for beloved players who have left Brentford.
Similar in some ways to Nottingham Forest, Brentford is nothing more than a provincial feeder club; a holding facility for larger clubs to swoop in and take pickings of the best players.
Brentford fans under no illusion.
The Brentford fans are under no illusion about the position of the club.
Since 2021, under Thomas ‘The Frank’ Engine, Brentford has managed to prolong a Premier League existence and cement a position as a mediocre, mid-table side.
Despite this prolonged existence, Brentford are not yet at a stage where the club can attract quality, career players.
To help fans cope with the inevitable loss of players, former Radio 1 disc jockey and radio presenter, Simon Bates, has offered to dedicate an ‘Our Tune’ to each beloved player that leaves the club during the transfer window.
Simon Bates to read personal messages.
Aired daily at 8.40am, Bates will read out a personal story submitted by a Brentford supporter, accompanied by a song that is significant to the departing player.
Speaking to ‘Hello’ magazine, Bates, 84, said, “It will be a pleasure to host a warm, heartfelt slot on the radio for Brentford fans. Tunes that spring to mind immediately are Chicago’s ‘Wissa You Were Here’ and ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ by 70s rock group, Rainbow.”
“When Ivan Toney left,” continued Bates, “to end his career in the Saudi graveyard, I considered playing songs by Barry Manilow, Morrissey, and Gloria Gaynor, as the fans were desperately sad to see ‘Bet365’ Toney leave. It hit them hard.
